Shut down, not shut out

Dear Government Workers now on involuntary furlough,

We see you.

We know that suddenly not having a place to go to do good work in the world has to be jarring, frustrating, and sad. Because a job isn't just a job, especially when it's public service. It's a sense of purpose. It's a community (yes, even if your fellow community members drive you crazy sometimes). It's knowing that you are working on behalf of others.

You do important work.

We know we can't fix it for you, but we want you to know our doors are open to you. If getting out of your house and into a warm, welcoming community of fellow workers would help you kick these shutdown blues, we would love to see you.
